A septic tank system is one that uses a tank to breakdown waste matter before discharging into the ground or watercourse. the efficiency of the unit  determines the final water quality. New installations require a permit from the Environment Agency who will test the water quality before issuing a permit to discharge.

Cess pools are a basic system where the waste collects in a tank and has to be emptied periodically.
